Did you know?…

You are eligible for 2 sets of 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests. You can order these tests at https://www.covid.gov/tests.

Although Resident Care does PCR COVID testing, we only do it for known exposures and residents who are symptomatic. The tests are sent to lab off site and can take anywhere from 24-72 hours to process.  Having a test kit at home is always beneficial to have when returning from a trip and for peace of mind.

EMERGENCIES: In the event of a life-threatening emergency, FIRST dial 911 and activate our Crosslands emergency alarm system (buttons provided at bedside and in the bathroom). For after hours, use the Firbank emergency phone number: 610-388-1440. An RN will respond to your apartment/cottage depending on the nature of your call and triage your needs appropriately.

There are times when a resident has a medical situation that is non-life-threatening but may need attention.   While on campus, Resident Care can be utilized during business hours and Firbank can be utilized after hours. If you are off the Crosslands campus when an urgent medical situation arises, there are Urgent Care centers located nearby. It is your decision to use an Urgent Care facility, however, we do ask that you follow up with our office with any paperwork that you were given so that we can update your medical records.

Since an emergency may result in a stay in Firbank or the hospital, residents are urged to have a bag pre-packed with the following personal belongings: robe, slippers, sweater, undergarments, change of clothes, shoes/socks, toothbrush and paste, comb or brush, reading material, cellphone and charger. Please have these items packed and readily available for easy access in the event they are needed.

Independent of emergency pull cords, the Pendant Alert System, which must be requested by the resident, is an addition method available by which residents may summon help. It is an alarm alert, worn by the resident as a pendant which only works inside the resident’s apartment. To obtain a pendant, you must fill out a pendant form located in the Resident Care office.

The SARA system is a safeguard system used throughout the KCC communities to ensure the wellbeing of our residents. The system will monitor the opening of the front door between the hours of 5:00 am – 10:30 am. If a resident opens their door between these hours the system will record the successful check-in. At 10:30 am resident(s) who have not successfully checked in by opening their front door will receive an automated phone call. Resident(s) who answer that phone call will be prompted to check-in by pressing the number 1 on their phone. If the check-in has not been completed successfully the resident will then receive a phone call from a resident care staff member. If there is no answer, maintenance will be dispatched to the apartment to ensure the well-being of the resident(s).

**If you are going to be away, please submit a Resident(s) Absence Form to the Front Desk Ambassador in the Main Center. The Front Desk Ambassador will enter the information into the SARA system so that you will be removed from the check-in during that time.**

Blood draws for labs: Wednesday & Friday, 8:00 am – 9:00 am By appointment only

(If you have an order for blood work from an outside physician, please call Resident Care to schedule an appointment and then drop off the lab slip before the day of your appointment.)

Residents are notified verbally of ALL diagnostic and blood test results (normal and abnormal) by the nurse practitioner or nurse. These results are reviewed by the primary physician and then scanned into the resident’s electronic medical record.

All consultation forms received will be reviewed by the Director of Resident Care or nurse practitioner as well as the primary physician before they are scanned into the resident’s electronic medical record.

Copies of test results will be provided to a resident when requested.

Residents receive an Annual Wellness Review. A notice will be sent out by Resident Care with a scheduled date and time for both the Medical Review with a nurse and the Annual Wellness Exam with the resident’s primary car physician or nurse practitioner.

On the date of your Medical Review, a nurse or nurse practitioner will call you to review your medication list, medical history and review and update emergency contact information and any other pertinent information in your medical record. This information is not only helpful to us bus is also necessary to comply with Medicare guidelines.

On the date of your Annual Wellness Exam the physician or nurse practitioner will conduct an overall physical assessment, review medications and order blood work and or other diagnostic tests that they deem necessary.

Residents who are not feeling well and unable to come to the dining room may receive a dinner tray in their apartment. Residents in need of this service should call the Resident Care department at 610-388-5634 before 1:00 PM daily if the feel they need one. A dining room staff member will call the resident for a menu selection. If there is no answer after a few phone attempts by the dining staff, the staff will pre-select a meal and deliver the meal during dinner. Please state any food allergies, food intolerance and the need for a special diet. Residents may call Firbank at 610-388-1440 for a tray if ill on weekends or holidays.

Residents are asked to inform the Resident Care Department of any off campus diagnostic testing and medical appointments.  A physician’s report should be submitted to the Resident Care office.  A Consultation form is provided to the resident to ensure communication between the consulting physician and the Resident Care department. The form(s) is placed in the resident’s open mailbox in the evening the business day before the test or appointment.  Residents should return the form following the medical visit or have their physician fax an office report to 610-388-5687.

Kendal Home Care offers additional services to residents of Crosslands, Cartmel, Coniston and Kendal at Longwood when daily activities become more challenging and life is more difficult than it needs to be.  Our Home Care provides extra support and assistance, allowing residents to make the most of everyday and maintain their health and independence.  Our array of services can be provided daily or on an intermittent basis.  The program is fee-for-service based – meaning it allows for one-to-one assistance charged at an hourly rate under a separate agreement.

Services can be delivered in increments of 15 to 30 minutes or by the hour.  Our program is unique in that family or friends may purchase Home Care, as a comforting gift for a resident member.
