Trees: An Art Exhibit

March – May 2023

Running from March through May, “Trees: An Art Exhibit” features the work of 20 Crosslands artists who employ a variety of techniques and mediums to depict their diverse perspectives on the trees of our world. Featuring paintings, photographs, drawings, pastels, and watercolors, the exhibit includes trees from around the world, through time, and from the imagination.

The exhibit is vast in scope and in placement in the Center. Part I of the show is in the gallery that runs from the dining room to the café. Part II is in the dining room vestibule on either side of the antique secretary. Part III is on the wall next to the woodshop on the lower level, and Part IV is outside the meditation room.

Trees have been a favorite subject of artists through the millennia, and Crosslands artists are no exception. From a baobab in Africa to the trees along Bennett’s Run, from a bark drawing to fine photographs on metal, and from appeals to protect the environment to trees that reference spirits, the artists celebrate the strength, delicacy, and beauty of this most extraordinary creation of nature.

Notice the subtle and bold colors. Look for the birds and insects that are included on some of the trees. Enjoy the titles, many of which are poetic and evocative. Head down the hall and down the stairs by the reception desk to take it all in. Speak to the artists and find out why they created their pieces and submitted them for display. As you soak it all in, ask yourself — or artists directly — what the artist is communicating, and why a particular medium, time of day, or technique was chosen.

Renny Wood, Art Exhibit

September 1 – November 30, 2022

Renny (Mary Reynolds Parke Wood) one of Crossland’s resident artists, was born in West Chester, PA.  She worked at the Brandywine Conservancy as a cartographer drawing maps by hand before computers took over that job. Friend and talented local artist, Nancy Thompson, agreed to teach Renny some rudiments of painting in exchange for computer lessons, and Renny was hooked.

Renny began studying watercolor painting in about 2005 at the Chester Country Art Association with Wendy Scheirer, a member of both the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Watercolor Societies.  In recent years, she has studied with Sarah Yeoman, a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.  Sarah has exhibited widely and is much sought after as a watercolor instructor. Among her many accomplishments, Sarah taught plein air classes in Italy for five years.

Renny and her husband of 60 years Larry have lived in Rushmore for six years, She specializes in painting flowers, and other still-life components and landscapes.
